I teach college students to get out of their own heads and see that there is more to life than just going through the motions. I do this through teaching about what James Madison calls "factions" and how the American Constitution is designed to get us beyond our own private interests and work for the common good. A great nation should not hides its flaws, but also cannot ignore the good, selfless acts its citizens have done. We're not a perfect nation, but we're striving to improve all the time. We can work with that... One way to learn this is to know the past, and preserve American history. In particular, I support the historic preservation of American battlefields to keep them free from development so Americans can see them as they were when citizens gave "their last full measure of devotion" to all of us.
To join others in showing that more unites us than divides us. If we can get beyond labels, political and otherwise, to see people as people, commonality will make the world a better place. We're not defined by our labels, but we're united by our diversity. We are a mosaic of different beliefs, ideas, backgrounds, and hopes. And that is beautiful...
